Preparing for MRI

Appointment Information

  • The test may take 30 to 90 minutes depending on type of MRI you are having.
  • Patients will be asked to change into a gown or scrub pants for patient safety.
  • Puget Sound Imaging does not offer sedation or distribute medication. But, we can work with your provider to get a prescription filled before your appointment. If you take a sedation medication, we require you to have a driver after the exam.
  • After your MRI exam, you will need to make a follow up appointment with your doctor to go over the findings of the exam. The doctor will not call you to go over results over the phone.
  • Review the MRI consent form for more information.

MRI Exam Safety Concerns

  • There is no radiation involved with MRI but there are serious safety concerns regarding implant safety and burning.

    • Remove all medication patches and jewelry: Certain medication patches or jewelry can heat up during the MRI.
    • Let your MRI tech know about any implants you may have or past surgeries that have left implants in your body: Some implants have specific scanning parameters to avoid overheating.
  • Pacemaker or defibrillator
  • Brian clips or aortic clips
  • Pain stimulating unit or internal TENS unit
  • Diabetic, liver or kidney issues, Hep C, or hypertension
  • Insulin pump
  • Coronary, artery or heart surgery
  • Any other implanted device not listed

If you have any current or previous metal injuries to the eyes you will need to be cleared by a X-ray examination before you can enter the MRI room. If you have previously cleared your eyes with X-ray a report will be required to avoid another screening.
